Senior Priorities

The needs of older people

With this new-found "third age" lifestyle comes a new set of priorities for the older person.

Although today's older people tend to be more independent and in control of their lives than in previous generations, they still have the same basic needs: ·

  • Health - how to prevent illness and keep fit
  • Wealth - financial security; having money to spend
  • Family - being within reach and staying in touch
  • Friends - keeping old friends and meeting new people
  • Personal safety - in the home and community
  • Keeping active mentally
  • Learning new skills
  • Keeping up-to-date with changes and technology
  • Recognition of their skills and knowledge

What are their needs as parents and grandparents?

As parents, they will always want a close bond with their children. They will probably have given up having high expectations for them, and just want a caring relationship

As grandparents, they will want to enjoy their grandchildren in an open and loving way . Although they love spending time with them, they can feel taken for granted by their children if they abuse this relationship and use the grandparents as unpaid babysitters.

If the grandparents are not spending enough time with their grandchildren, it may be that they are holding back, not wanting to interfere.

Keeping the lines of communication open and respecting each others' needs will solve most problems.

Quick Checklist

  • Make clear arrangements for grandchild visits and stick to them
  • Do not presume that older people have nothing better to do
  • Ask about, and respect, their other activities
  • Arrange some activities for all 3 generations to enjoy together
