Needs of Older People

Understanding needs and expectations

We do not change radically as we get older. We are essentially the same people, from childhood to old age. We have the same needs: physical, emotional and spiritual.

Unless we keep extremely fit, we will experience limitations in our physical abilities and our energy levels will decrease slowly. But that will not stop the mind from having the same interests, ambitions, desires and feelings.

What are their expectations?

Older people, into their eighties and beyond, are now defying the ageing process, to make sure that they can do all the things they still want to do, or did not have time to do earlier in life.

Many play sport, travel widely or follow a fitness regime. Many participate in study groups, such as the University of the Third Age , or enrol in academic courses.

One in 8 continue to participate in the workforce, or run their own business. Life expectancy has increased so much - 20 years since the beginning of the last century - that retirement can now be the beginning of a new lease of life.

Only 1 in 20 live in a nursing home or hostel. More than 75% of older people own their own home and remain in the community where they have lived and worked.

What are their interests?

If the older person is used to independence and is living independently in retirement, she will want to maintain her interests and her friends and remain active within society.

Although some will continue to work, those who are financially independent will often actively seek out voluntary work, in order to contribute to their community, maintain their skills and widen their social contacts.

These activities are important to an older person, just as they are for anyone, because they give him a sense of control and self-worth . No-one wants to be dependent and, even if a person becomes physically dependent on others, he will need to feel that he is giving something of his own.

Most older people do not need help with their daily living. Elderly parents who are encouraged to keep up all the daily tasks, such as cooking, cleaning and shopping, will not only remain physically fit, but will be cheerful and mentally active.
