Health Needs of Older People

Health, fitness and sickness

With the baby boomers reaching retirement age and the younger generation not having so many babies, the proportion of older people in society is growing rapidly

Now, with the possibility of maintaining good health into extreme old age, there is no need for older people to lose their self-esteem or accept a second-rate existence.

By encouraging our elderly relatives to keep their good health and stay fit and active , we can increase their enjoyment of life and reinforce their sense of self-worth. They will be active and stimulating parents and grandparents.

Sickness

Ageing is now known to be, to a large extent, under our own control. By following good health habits, we can increase our life expectancy, which in Australia is now about 85 years.

Many major diseases are now eradicated and many more can be treated if diagnosed in the early stages. Regular medical check-ups , at least once a year, will bring to light any health problems that need attention.

Nutritional supplements, such as iron, may be found necessary. Screening for breast and prostate cancer are also available. Vaccination against others, such as flu, is also a good idea.

Fitness

People are never too old to exercise. In fact, it is essential to keep exercising into old age . Many Chinese people who have practised Tai Chi all their lives retain their suppleness well into their eighties.

  • Exercise, eat healthy food, do not smoke
  • Cardio-vascular exercises for the heart
  • Weight-bearing exercises for bone strength
  • Stretching exercises for muscles and mobility
  • Exercise and nutrition for blood pressure
