Casual Employment History

Including casual employment details in your resume

If you have worked part-time, casual or even voluntary you should include the following details:

  • Name of the company and a brief description of what they do.
Example - BLOGGS PTY LTD is a manufacturer and distributor for widgets throughout Australia
  • The year that you worked for the company.
Example November 1998 to Present (or the date that you finished working) using months.
  • Your job title - Example Customer Service Operator.
  • Your duties and responsibilities - In point form, list all of the things that you do on a daily basis in your job. Include everything that you do because it can really show how skilled and responsible you are in your job.
  • References/ Referees - Written references from an employer, school, family or friends are great and copies should be included in a presentation folder.
  • Avoid using original documents because you may not get them back. Be aware that, generally speaking, most references are conducted verbally so you will have to pick someone that can speak honestly about you as a person as well as verify any work that you did. People who can speak honestly about you include supervisors or managers that you work for, teachers, school principal, year master, a head member of a church, sport group or organisation that you belong to.
  • Carefully select your referees so that you are confident that they will speak highly and honestly about you.
  • Include at least 2-3 references if possible.
  • Speak to your referees first and get permission to use their name and contact details in your resume or on an application form.
  • It is also a good idea to keep in contact with your referees and to call them if you have been for an interview let them know they may be contacted.
