Combining Breastfeeding and Work

How to make it work

Whilst on Parental Leave:

By this stage you may have decided whether you will be considering combining breastfeeding and work. It is time to sit and think of a strategy or alternative work routine to be discussed with your Manager to help you achieve these objectives.

  • How long does it take you to breastfeed and how often do you need to breastfeed to achieve your goals and how will this impact on your working day?
  • How will your position responsibilities be covered while you are away from your desk breastfeeding, e.g. urgent requests, telephone calls, etc.
  • How will this impact on your team?
  • How will this impact on your customers?
  • Think about how you will organise meetings and work commitments around your breastfeeding or expressing.
  • How will you utilise flexible work practices available to you.
  • Before returning to work, your baby needs to be able to drink breast milk from a bottle or cup.
  • Talk to your childcare service or carer about your intentions to combine work and breastfeeding.
  • To breastfeed your baby throughout the day, source childcare close to work.
  • How will you store your expressed milk?

When you return to work:

  • Discuss your feeding or expressing needs with selected team members/colleagues.
  • Plan and develop an illness action plan.
  • Provide your service with instructions on your preferred method of handling your breast milk.
  • Try to relax - source techniques that work for you, to assist you to achieve the "let down" process.

At work, consider:

  • Keeping extra breast pads handy.
  • Keeping a spare shirt in the office.
